A Very Fine Flake
In appreciation of Emily Flake
This week the Thurber House announced that its third annual Thurber Prize in Cartoon Art is going to the one and only Emily Flake. You may know Emily from her exceptional contributions to The New Yorker over the years, or from her hilarious illustrated books such as “Mama Tried.” But I know Emily from the time she asked me to join her in a tipsy karaoke duet at Sing Sing St. Marks in the East Village.
To say that Emily is the life of the party is an understatement. To say that she deserves recognition for her achievements is an even under-er one.
So, in celebration of my dear colleague’s award, I wanted to share just a few of my all-time favorite Flakes. Congratulations, Emily!
Do yourself a favor and check out the rest of her work. Please, give in to temptation…
And if she ever invites you to karaoke — say yes!
Behind the paywall I can’t promise a video of me singing (hey, I’m trying to gain subscribers, not repel them), but you will find my latest cartoons and their process videos. Please consider signing up for just $7 a month or $70 a year. Your support makes everything I do possible. Thank you!
