It’s my birthday! Now that I’m firmly in my mid-forties (firm in the actuarial sense, if not the abdominal sense), I feel like I should have some sage wisdom to dispense.

But to be honest, I haven’t had much time for reflection—

Between recovering from a fractured ankle, staying on top of deadlines, and assiduously procrastinating until those same deadlines, I’ve been too distracted to conjure up deep thoughts—

When you’re busy making witticism, it’s hard to gather your wits.

There is one thing I do know for certain, though—it’s that I’m very grateful for the creative bounty that last year brought! Let’s tick through it quickly:

My fourth picture book came out, inspired by one of my all-time favorite New Yorker cartoons—

My debut cartoon collection was also published—which has just been nominated for an Eisner Award! (The Eisner Awards are like the Oscars for average-looking people.)

If you’re going to San Diego ComicCon this July, I’ll see you there! Just keep an eye out for the tall guy whose DragonBall Z costume looks homemade.

And last but very much not least, I began this Substack! (Adding a link here would be silly.) It’s been wonderful to share my work with our growing community, and to create cartoons that don’t belong anywhere else for an audience whose sense of humor is just as broad and bizarre and my own.

My birthday wish is that we continue to grow—older and funnier.

Wiser is optional.

If you feel like giving this middle-aged guy a birthday present, please subscribe! It’s by far the best way to support my work directly, and to keep the cartoons flowing in the coming year. Thank you!
