Who's ready to party like it's 1776?

Now that my own birthday is in the rearview mirror, I’m shifting focus to America’s upcoming milestone. Or perhaps it’s better to say marathon-stone?

We’ve come a long way as a nation—and we look downright exhausted by the journey.

On the one hand, it’s impressive that a fractious, flawed, and some might say freakish democracy has enduring for two-and-a-half centuries. On the other hand, maybe it’s time to take the car keys away from grandpa?




Many thanks to Yale Climate Connections and The Revelator, respectively, for letting me work through my political angst. You can expect a whole lot more of these as July 4th approaches.

But not everything is doom and gloom in America—

Hey, we have the New York Knicks! (When was the last time that sentiment made sense?) They’re in the NBA Finals for the first time in the 21st century (talk about dubious milestones), and as a newly converted Knickerbockers fanboy, I’m all kinds of excited. So much so that I sketched a New Yorker cover pitch about it—



Alas, they didn’t give a thumbs-up. But much like the Knicks, I’ve grown inured to failure. I will continue submitting sketches until I’m lucky enough to grace the cover again. (Let’s just hope it doesn’t take until the next century…)
